The word "communication" derives from the Latin word "communicare," which means "to share knowledge or to inform by means of speaking and writing."  While our ability to share knowledge and information has expanded due to many technological advances, the study of Communication Arts is dedicated to the principle that all communication -- no matter how sophisticated its transmission -- must be based in thinking, writing, and oral skills.
